Reviewing the Geekey Multi-Tool: A Must-Have Travel Tool (TSA Compliant)

Last Christmas, we were fortunate to visit the Holiday Inn Resort in Tyler and I was EXCITED to have access to a kitchen. We purchased canned goods, fruits, and vegetables for our family and I was so prepared...or so I thought. Unfortunately, this kitchen did not have a can opener. So, this meant that I had to try to use a pocket knife from the Dollar Tree and that did not work either.

So, no canned goods for us. No black beans, no green beans, and no corn. I promised my family that I would be more prepared next time! That night, I searched on the internet for a travel can opener that is TSA compliant and I found several multi-key tools, but I never purchased one. A few months later, we were contacted by the Geekey company to review their product and I JUMPED at the opportunity.

You can check out the Geekey Multi-Tool here - https://amzn.to/3cbX4M7
*This is our Amazon Affiliate link.

This tool is life changing for our family. It is heavy duty and it can perform the following functions:

Bike Spoke Key
Multi-Fit Driver
Wire (Refiner). ;)
Open Wrench
Ruler
Bit Driver
Scoring Tip (great for opening boxes - instead of using a key)
Bottle Opener
Closed Wrench
Serrated Edge
Can Opener
File
Wire Bender
Multi-Head Fit
and Lanyard Hole

We will definitely keep this around, because we are always opening Amazon boxes, fixing items around the house with a Phillips head screwdriver, opening cans, and using a can opener!

Remember to add this item to your holiday gift and birthday list!

Sincerely,

The Weekends Count Family

How Parents Can Prepare for the Tax Season

How Parents Can Prepare for the Tax Season

Tax season is always a challenging season for parents. They have to determine how  they are going to integrate taxes with everything else they are encountering in their day-to-day life. From the new baseball games and graduation activities to prom and meetings with teachers, parents are busy. Parents should consider keeping the following tips in mind when preparing for their taxes.

1 - Place all of your tax items in a separate zipper folder. Your important tax items can remain there until they are ready for your Tax Date.

2 - Set aside specific dates and times for your Tax Date. This date needs to be added to your schedule on your phone or in your planner. You need to keep your date and avoid being late.

3 - Consider a night date. After the kids are asleep, you can simply turn on your computer and get ready for tax season.

4 - Know about your tax deductions. Each year, many individuals fail to identify relevant tax deductions until it is too late. You do not want to leave any relevant tax deductions on the table.

5 - Have a family member check your work and to highlight any potential deductions that you missed.

6 - Call your childcare provider. Sometimes, they forget to send receipts for your childcare and these are definitely needed for your taxes.

7 - Talk to your accountant early! Do not wait until it is too late.

8 - Save your work from this year to prepare for next year’s tax season. Work smarter and not harder to prepare for taxes.

Keep these in mind when you are preparing for the deadline of the year. Avoid those late fees and plan to have a great tax season.

Have a great week and plan for the weekend!

Sincerely,

The @WeekendsCount Family!

The Top Smart Home Devices, Security, and Technology from Amazon: Gift Guide for 2018

When we were in Austin for the Texas Tribune Festival, we had to stop by the Amazon Store. It was amazing, but I admit that I was very attracted to the big silver Airstream outside with "Smart Life Roadshow" on the back of the vehicle. This vehicle featured all of the new Amazon products! It had trendy music playing and even a "you are at home" doormat. I was 100% sold on the experience.

Now, I just had to be sold on the product. Eventually, I was sold and I am a believer in the products. I believe in smart homes and smart devices. Remember, I am the millennial who had a Commodore 64 computer when I was four years old.

Now, the homes are smart and the people are as well. Now, let me tell you HOW smart, this experience made me believe that smart homes make our lives easier and can save us a wealth of time and money.

Here's the Smart Life Roadshow experience.

These Smart Life Roadshow experiences featured the following products:

Seven Tips for Shopping on Amazon Prime Day!

It is the most wonderful time of the year! Amazon Prime Day!

Amazon Prime Day was created a few years ago for Amazon.com to boost sales of their products in the summertime. This event was similar to Black Friday events, but it also included limited time deals, subscribe and save deals with coupons, and deals that lasted all day. The products offered on Amazon Prime Day usually range from electronics and clothing to food products and household items.

Here are seven tips for shopping on Amazon Prime Day:

Tip #1 - Remember to download the Amazon app to receive notifications of limited time deals.

Tip #2 - At the beginning of Amazon Prime Day, remember to examine all of the limited time deals and then add these deals to your notification/watch list on the Amazon app.

Tip #3 - Determine if you need to purchase an annual subscription to Amazon Prime, Amazon Music Unlimited, or Amazon Kindle Unlimited before the day begins.

Courtesy of Amazon.com

Tip #4 - Purchasing Amazon gift cards from Kroger or other stores that offer fuel points for gift card purchases.

Tip #5 - Use online shopping portals that offer rebates or airline miles for using their link to access Amazon. These shopping portals can include E-bates, American Airlines, United Airlines, and others.

Tip #6 - Set a budget before you begin shopping on Amazon Prime Day. It is easy to spend more money than you anticipate spending.

Tip #7 - Develop a list of items that usually appear on your weekly/monthly shopping list, then look for these items when the Amazon Prime list becomes available.

These simple tips can help everyone create a strategy for one of the most important savings days of the year! Remember to prepare a strategy and you can save money on items that you will purchase anyway.

This post contains affiliate links to help you build your shopping list and travel list for your family. We are passionate about the product and the experiences listed in this post, but we also wanted to provide easy links you can click to purchase products for your busy lifestyle.

From Lack of Passion to Productivity - A Review of Productivity Hacks

It is painful everyday to wake up and to look at my daily schedule. Literally running from meeting to meeting, being asked to solve large-scale problems, and to develop creative ideas to recruit and retain individuals is quite a challenge every day.

For the past few weeks, I've made a concerted effort to wake up extra early to sit on a rug in my bathroom and to stretch and explore a few yoga poses. After my before the sun arises poses have truly made a difference in my daily life. After those few minutes of wellness, I am ready to conquer my day and walk from meeting to meeting!

It seems that millennial moms are some of the most overworked individuals in the workforce. More of them are working mothers (outside of the home), they are responsible for household tasks (shared with their partners), and usually they are tackling several tasks at once.

I wish that I had this book before transitioning to a new semester (of the school year). "Productivity Hacks: A Time Management Plan to Become More Productive" presents several innovative ways for individuals to become better prepared to address their daily activities.

Here are the chapters of the book:

1 - Introduction

2 - Bad Habits That Kill Our Productivity

3 - Set Your Goals

4 - Day-By-Day Plan to Increase Productivity

5 - Conclusion

The book is very organized and well written. Moms, regardless of their experiences, can definitely relate to the lists and tasks presented in the book.

Here are my top 10 favorite tips from the book:

1 - Automate Routine Tasks

2 - Limit Your To Do Lists to 5 Items or Less

3 - Wait for Optimal Work Conditions

4 - Use the Internet Only When the Task Demands It

5 - Take Short Breaks Between Tasks (An hour between tasks is recommended).

6 - Avoid Moral Licensing (Excuses for negative behavior (i.e. - eating unhealthy foods, etc.)

7 - Create a Vision for Your Life

8 - Develop a Personal Mission Statement

9 - Create a Morning/Evening Routine (and practice it each day)

10 - Remember to Include Meals in Your Weekly Schedule

This is definitely a great book for anyone, but especially person who work for large corporations, entrepreneurs, and teachers.

How to Handle the Stress of Being a Caregiver for Your Aging Parents

While we mostly focus on travel and homeschooling on this blog, one of the biggest challenges we have faced as a family is serving as caregivers for aging parents. Charlotte Canion, author of You Have to Laugh to Keep from Crying: How to Parent Your Parents, offers her insights on how to cope with the stress of being a caregiver and seeing the health of your parents decline.

Why did you write this book?

I was the caregiver for a father-in-law with dementia, a mother with Alzheimer’s and a father with Parkinson’s – all at the same time. My journey started over ten years ago and I was unable to find usable written information about aging diseases, information that was available was written by doctors and read like a medical textbook in a foreign language. I kept a journal and knew at that time, I was going to write a book. My passion was and still is to help adult children cope with the stress that goes along with caring for a parent or aging loved one. I share down-to-earth advice on how to manage everything from day-to-day tasks to making long-term decisions on the right type of care for their elderly loved ones.

How does remembering to laugh help in dealing with aging parents?

Laughter creates endorphins and doctors have proven that laughter has helped even those with cancer. I tried to find the humor in every situation and that helped to heal even the toughest of problems. Everyone wants to be happy and laughter is the key to opening the doors to euphoric feelings. If you read my book you will discover that my dad, who was a difficult man, had done some very bad things in his life. Forgiveness was a big part of my story and the healing came through laughter. Laughter was the saving grace in many situations with all my parents.

What does “Parenting Your Parents” mean?

WOW! You ask the big question, because the answer is different for many people. I wrote my book with LOVE – RESPECT – PATIENCE – FORGIVENESS.  My parents brought me into this world and without them I would not be here. I felt the obligation to step up and do whatever needed to be done. All in the context of giving back what they had done for me as a child. I was well fed, had a roof over my head and I got an education. I retired early in order to be ready for whatever was coming next. A little known fact is nine out of ten caregivers are a female.

I came up with Four Golden Rules:

You have to LOVE unconditionally, (you may not like some of their actions or comments) but you must Love them.

RESPECT is what we have learned from childhood and the world would be a better place, if we would respect each other - especially our parents. Our parents tried to do their best and many times failing, but it is within our power to show the respect that they need at this point in their lives.

PATIENCE is something we must practice every day. As a caregiver I had to have patience with my parents for who, what, and where they were at any given time of the day. I also had to have patience with myself for the feelings I would go through.  Caregivers are human, and they need to take care of themselves first, because if the caregiver got sick, who will take care of their parents? We need to vent; we may need to cry, and we may even want to scream. But we never want the loved one to feel they caused those feelings. The diseases that are attacking our parents or loved ones are out of their control, and I feel there is enough confusion in their minds, without my adding to their confused state of mind. I save my crying and venting outside, where they cannot hear me. This will create a calming and more productive environment.

FORGIVENESS is the hardest. Many adult children carry around feelings that need to be forgiven. Many parents have a hard time forgiving their children of something that may have happened decades ago. I have a favorite saying: Unforgiveness is an Anchor – Forgiveness is Freedom. As I said earlier, my father was not a model father, and he had done things that most people could never forgive. In my book I tell the “FORGIVENESS STORY”, and I share this story at churches and many groups. The response is amazing, and people tell me that they have been estranged from a family member for decades. I give them hope! I was the only one who could be my dad’s caregiver.

Remember all you will have left are memories once your loved ones are gone; create cherished memories now!

How can members of the Sandwich Generation manage caring for aging parents and their own children?

Since families are having children later in life these days, it is probably more conceivable that the seniors are older, and thus the chance of needing care becomes an issue. I have seen where couples have their retired parents move closer to them, so they can help out when needed. I have also seen where a single senior came into the home and to help with the children. This is really a great idea, as nowadays grandparents and grand-children have very little time together. One hundred years ago families lived together, and the children were influenced by the grandparent(s). This was and is a good thing. In today’s society, both parents work and that leaves the children with strangers. Some of the young families with elderly parents have them move into a home next door or on the same street. In today's society there are many communities of Retirement Villages, and these facilities provide great activities, medical care, and individual living units. Can the Sandwich Generation manage caring for aging parents and care for their own children? YES! Every family member can help as a team. My parents loved to see grandchildren and great grandchildren; they could see their legacy live on. There are many organizations that can come in during the day and help the parent with daily needs. It becomes the responsibility of the adult children to be smart as to when it is time for a facility to handle the really tough cases of parenting parents. That is the time you can shower all the love and attention on the aging parent and not have to worry about the day to day normal needs.

Cutting the Cable Cord and Saving Money for Your Family Weekend Activities with Mohu and Roku Devices on Amazon

Our family decided to cut our access to cable around four years ago! We LOVE travel and we had to find a way to afford it. So, we decided to save money for our family travel and activities by cutting the cable cord. After that cord cutting moment, we decided to purchase a Roku device from Amazon to view our favorite network television shows on ABC, NBC, PBS (and PBS Kids), etc.

Also, we purchased a television antenna as well. This has been a GAME changer for our family because we get to watch local TV channels. We are HUGE fans of the Mohu antenna and we've been able to watch around local TV channels in the DFW area (including PBS Kids). The Mohu antenna looks like this:
